Putting the 'fun' back in to funding!
Over 115 people benefited from the Funding & Information Fayre held last Friday in Kyleakin Hall including representatives from over 60 community groups. This was the third such event we have organised in the last 6 years and this time round it was not only bigger and better but attendance had doubled! As well as volunteers from local groups from all over Skye, Lochalsh and Raasay a number of people had travelled from as far afield as Ullapool, Poolewe, Garve, Inverness and Nairn to attend – and the special journey to Skye proved well worth the effort. We were able to organise the event with funding from Highland LEADER, HIE and Highland Council and co-ordinated a packed programme of scheduled workshops and presentations beginning with a popular Funder Bingo session as introduction to the variety of funding available:-
“Funder Bingo was an excellent way to get a lot of questions answered” enthused one attendee.
The day offered groups unique opportunities to speak face to face with a variety of funders & agencies – many of whom had information stands and offered one-to-one surgery sessions. Some of the funders had travelled from the Central Belt to participate including Big Lottery, Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland, Scottish Arts Council, The Robertson Trust and CRBS. Locally based agencies such as HIE and Highland Council were also on hand for questions. Funders and attendees alike commented on the ‘buzz’ of the day, with Fraser Falconer National Co-ordinator for BBC Children in Need heralding the event as “the best I attend in Scotland”
Everyone went home with plenty of food for thought about future fundraising and a clear picture on the range of help and services available to them. Many commented that the day had given them hope and resolve for targeting specific funders. One attendee summarized their new found confidence with the aim to “ re-evaluate where our group stands, and clarify our aims to make applications to funders clearer and more accurate”
